Thunderbird 52: foutmelding Contacts Sidebar-extensie

Vanavond heb ik Thunderbird 52 geïnstalleerd, aangezien deze beschikbaar was gekomen.

Na herstart toonde Contacts Sidebar een foutmelding:

Eerst dacht ik dat dit met de Nederlandse vertaling te maken had, maar het blijkt zich ook voor te doen in een Engelse Thunderbird.

Het lijkt erop dat Thunderbird niet meer standaard een vertaling heeft voor searchInput.label, want deze term staat ook niet in de vertalingen van Contacts Sidebar.

In Thunderbird heet dit nu searchContacts.label. Daarom heb ik dit bijgewerkt in het bestand contactsPanel.xul en dat weer in het XPI-bestand bijgewerkt (met 7-zip). Na installatie van de XPI in Thunderbird gaf deze extensie geen foutmelding meer.

Ik heb dit zojuist aangekaart bij het forum op http://sparkyio.com/cs/viewforum.php?f=9
Op dat forum zijn mijn berichten nu nog niet zichtbaar, omdat ze eerst door een forumbeheerder moeten worden goedgekeurd.

Ik hoop dat dit leidt tot een nieuwe versie van de Contacts Sidebar-extensie (1.8 in plaats van 1.7 beta ?) waarin dit is aangepast.

I don't understand Dutch but I gather that you have found a workaround to make this extention work in TB 52.

If you did, can you explain to me in English what do I have to do to fix it?

I would greatly appreciate since I use it a lot.

You are right.

I disassembled the extension and in the file Contactspanel.xul I changed searchInput.label to searchContacts.label

Then I put the changed file back in the xpi-file (using the 7zip-archiver) and installed that into Thunderbird.

I also submitted this to the forum of the maintainer mentioned above, but my messages on that forum should first be approved by an admin.
I hope that this change will be incorporated into the man extension.

But... It doesn't work!

I did exactly like you did: I unzipped the extention with 7zip, opened Contactspanel.xul (with Notepad2 ---> http://www.flos-freeware.ch/ ), then in line 215 I changed searchInput.label to searchContacts.label; I then put the modified file back in the xpi-file using 7zip and I fed that to my TB.

It doesn't give me an error anymore. The contact panel is back there, but it is empty, there are no contacts in it. But the contacts are still in TB all right, as it is evident if I open any "Write message" new window.

Maybe this workaround doesn't work with my TB 'cos I'm using the Italian localised version of TB?

Any suggestion?

De tip lijkt me nou niet zo zinvol. De oorspronkelijke add-on wordt al vanaf ik dacht Thunderbird 17 niet meer onderhouden, en die van Sparky lijkt me niet meer dan een fork ervan waarvoor hetzelfde geldt, wellicht omdat de functionaliteit ervan voor zover ik weet al in Thunderbird is ingebouwd. Ik zou dus geen hoop vestigen op een dergelijke add-on waarvan de ontwikkelaar niet eens de code onder de knie heeft of bijhoudt, dan wel zijn code afhankelijk laat zijn van strings van het programma zelf die zomaar kunnen verdwijnen. Zijn forum is ook al 2 jaar niet actief, en vast niet zonder reden.

Is de functionaliteit niet gewoon die van de Adressenzijbalk, via het menu Beeld, of toets F9 (tijdens opstellen van een bericht)?
De supportwebsite komt v.z.i.w. niet verder dan deze artikelen: 1, 2, 3 (zoek naar 'adressenzijbalk' of 'contactenzijbalk').

Ik heb de gelinkte artikelen bekeken en ook even een laptop met Thunderbird erbij gepakt om te zien wat de standaard-functionaliteit van Thunderbird is.

De functionaliteit van Contacts Sidebar is vooral dat die "Adressenzijbalk" al direct linksonder in het hoofdvenster van Thunderbird wordt getoond. Dan kun je direct vanuit het hoofdvenster een nieuwe mail opstellen aan de juiste contactpersoon (in plaats van eerst het Opstellen-venster te openen).

I did not check whether the functionality of the extension also worked. I am sorry about that.

- it is in the Compose-window of Thunderbird (press F9 to show it on the left side of the compose-window)

I'm afraid it isn't... Contacts Sidebar provides a panel right in TB's main window, from which you can select a contact with a single click. TB's inbuilt "contacts sidebar" shows up only within the compose-windows. That's not about the same thing ...but I guess since nobody seems to care about this, I'll have to do without the contacts panel in the main window

Right... From what I understand, the idea of adding the Contacts Sidebar panel to the 3-pane window mainly derived from user demands to make TB look like Outlook. I could not find the associated bug for its implementation, but assume it wasn't honored for that reason (only - and left for an add-on task), since it would take up lots of space on the left that Outlook may not need due to less avaiable features / folder pane views, and to little avail. After all, it takes just one click to open the compose window.

Feel free to file a bug for implementing this in Thunderbird however, though considering TB's current development status, I'm not sure it would be.

Well, in my opinion it's not a matter of how it looks, or of what it looks like... it is a matter of functionality... Personally, in my TB, I have 13 folders in my folder-tree but this leaves all the same TONS of empty space below, which is completely useless. It is empty and without any function. I don't see what harm can a 4th panel below the folders one can do. Anyway, as I said earlier, I guess I will have to do without it

Well, you may have configured only 1 account then - I didn't mention those but your mileage may vary when you have e.g. 3, as well as feed and/or newsgroup subscriptions, and expanded all or most of them by default. Additionally, I guess you'll get used to the additional click and forgot about the add-on within a week.

Not at all... I actually have 12 accounts The fact is that I don't use separate folders for everyone of them, but I just collect all the mail from the different POP accounts (not IMAP) in the "Local folders"... to me that's the spirit of using a mail client, if I wanted separate folders for every account I would just have used the webclient of each account ... like most of the people in the planet do

But you are probably right... within a week I will probably get used to the additional click and just forget about this.

With the rise of mobile IM-ing, sending email is getting rarer and rarer by the day, anyway...

Sorry for the late reply. Just found this forum when looking for a fix for the Contacts Sidebar!

Non-display is a separate bug - see http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... p=14730367. If you click on the drop-down list of address books and re-select the list appears. However, none of the search functions work. Shame about it all because it's a handy add-on.

PS Thanks to Martijn for curing the error message. It would be great if you could fix the loss of functions when the list is displayed in the Contacts Sidebar I can now see!
